You’re ready to challenge yourself, improve your physical fitness, and learn more about your abilities.

As a forward-thinking person, you start looking for a good pair of running shoes—something that will support you throughout the event while remaining comfortable enough for long-term use, without breaking the bank. You visit a reputable shoe store, try on a few pairs, and decide which style, colour, comfort, and durability suit you best.

Diving is much the same. A good set of fins that meets your needs is an important part of your equipment. By visiting a reputable dive shop, you can speak with experienced staff or a professional dive instructor who can help you make the right choice.

My First Pair of Fins

When I was starting out as an Open Water diver, I bought myself a decent pair of fins: Atomic Viper 2s.

They are a solid pair of fins suited to various kicking styles, which helped the younger me experiment as I learned to dive.

At the time, I didn’t necessarily understand just how much of a difference fins could make. As my diving developed, however, their importance became much more obvious.

Before I started my diploma to become an instructor, I upgraded to a pair of Zeagle Recons. I’ve loved everything about these fins. However, I do wish I’d bought a smaller pair of boots to go with them!

Why Do We Use Fins?

Underwater, our legs are considerably more useful for propulsion than our arms. Fins increase the surface area of our feet, allowing each kick to move a much larger volume of water.

This makes swimming underwater faster, more efficient, and considerably less tiring.

Without fins, a diver needs to work much harder to travel the same distance. Increased effort means increased breathing, and increased breathing means using the gas in your cylinder more quickly.

A good pair of fins can therefore contribute not only to comfort, but also to better gas consumption and a more relaxed dive.

This becomes especially noticeable when diving against a current. A diver with an efficient kick and suitable fins can maintain their position or move through the water while using considerably less energy than someone who is constantly fighting the water.

Control and Manoeuvrability

Fins aren’t only used for moving forwards.

As divers become more experienced, they can use different kicking techniques to control their position in the water. Techniques such as the frog kick, modified flutter kick, helicopter turn, and back kick allow a diver to move precisely without relying heavily on their hands.

This is particularly useful when diving near fragile environments such as reefs.

Good fin control allows you to turn, stop, or move backwards without accidentally kicking coral, disturbing sediment, or damaging marine life.

It also becomes increasingly important when diving in confined spaces or around other divers, where being able to control exactly where you are going is essential.

Efficiency

One of the biggest benefits of a good pair of fins is efficiency.

A poorly suited fin may require considerably more effort to produce useful movement. If a fin is too stiff, a diver may experience fatigue or cramping. If it is too soft, the diver may find that much of their kicking effort produces very little propulsion.

The ideal fin provides enough resistance to push water effectively while still being comfortable for the individual diver.

This is why there is no single fin that is perfect for everyone.

A diver with strong legs may prefer a stiffer fin, while another diver may prefer something lighter and more flexible. Your preferred kicking technique, diving environment, equipment configuration, and even your ankle mobility can all influence what feels comfortable and performs well.

Different Fin Designs

There are several common styles of diving fins, each with different advantages.

Paddle Fins

Paddle fins use a relatively simple, solid blade. They are common, reliable, and work well with a wide range of kicking techniques.

Split Fins

Split fins have a separation through the centre of the blade. They are designed to reduce resistance during the kick and can be comfortable for divers who prefer a lighter kicking action.

Vented Fins

Vented fins contain openings in the blade that control how water moves across the fin. Depending on the design, this can help reduce resistance while still producing strong propulsion.

There are also fins designed specifically for technical diving, freediving, snorkelling, and other specialised activities.

This is another reason why choosing fins should be based on what you actually intend to use them for, rather than simply choosing whichever pair looks the coolest.

Although looking cool certainly doesn’t hurt.

Comfort and Fit

Like running shoes, fins need to fit correctly.

If you are using full-foot fins, they should feel secure without painfully squeezing your feet. Open-heel fins are normally worn with dive boots, meaning the size of both the boot and the fin needs to be considered.

A fin that is too loose may move around on your foot, reducing efficiency or potentially coming off during the dive. A fin that is too tight may cause discomfort, rubbing, or cramping.

Straps are also worth considering. Traditional rubber straps work perfectly well, while spring or bungee-style straps can make fins easier to put on and remove.

These may seem like small details when you’re standing in a dive shop, but after several dives in one day, those small differences in comfort can become very noticeable.

Choosing Your Fins

When choosing fins, think about where and how you are likely to dive.

Consider:

What kicking styles you normally use.

Whether you will be diving in strong currents.

Whether you want a stiff or flexible blade.

Whether you use dive boots.

The weight and size of the fins, particularly if you travel.

How easy they are to put on and remove.

Whether replacement straps or parts are readily available.

Your budget.

Whenever possible, try fins before buying them. Even better, if a dive shop offers rental or demonstration equipment, try them in the water.

So, How Do Fins Benefit You as a Diver?

Ultimately, your fins are one of the main tools you use to interact with the water around you.

A suitable pair can help you:

Move more efficiently.

Reduce fatigue.

Improve your positioning.

Conserve breathing gas.

Increase your control underwater.

As your diving skills improve, your fins become less about simply moving you forwards and more about allowing you to control exactly how you move.

The right fins can make your diving more comfortable, more efficient, and more enjoyable—and, like a good pair of running shoes, finding the right ones can make a huge difference.

Fins and How They Benefit You Imagine you’ve signed up to run a marathon.
