{"id":170,"date":"2016-02-16T01:11:02","date_gmt":"2016-02-16T01:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/?p=170"},"modified":"2016-02-16T01:11:02","modified_gmt":"2016-02-16T01:11:02","slug":"mana-island-jan-30th-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/divehq.co.nz\/blog\/mana-island-jan-30th-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Mana Island \u2013 Jan 30th 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mana Island lies just 3km west of Porirua and yet after many years of diving and 100\u2019s of local dives yesterday was my first dive experience off the island.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reef-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-thumbnail wp-image-174 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reef-3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Reef 3\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The island itself is 3km long and just over 2km wide. With steep cliffs and a plateau it was cleared in the early 1800\u2019s for sheep farming.\u00a0 Now under DOC control there is a reforestation program in place and wildlife such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giant_weta\">Cook Strait Giant Weta<\/a>,\u00a0S<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shore_plover\">hore plover<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Island_robin\">North Island robin<\/a>,\u00a0T<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Takahe\">akahe<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wellington_green_gecko\">Wellington green gecko<\/a>,\u00a0Y<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yellow-crowned_parakeet\">ellow-crowned parakeet<\/a>, and\u00a0B<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brown_teal\">rown teal<\/a> have been returned to the island with more species to be reintroduced including tuatara, little spotted kiwi and giant snails.<\/p>\n<p>As a diver the cliffs that drop straight down into the water, dropping to 30m+ in places with large scattered boulders and reefs , creates some interesting terrain to explore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although the day started off overcast the sun did shine, the seas were flat and surprisingly for Wellington the winds were calm. We dropped in a line for our descent and were please to see it drop away \u2013 this indicated some good visibility was in store for our dives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reef.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-thumbnail wp-image-175 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reef-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Reef\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reef-2-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-thumbnail wp-image-173 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Reef-2-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Reef 2 (1)\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Happy-Diver.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-thumbnail wp-image-171 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.divehq.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Happy-Diver-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Happy Diver\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dives were great, no current, lots of marine life, 17 degrees and 8-10m visibility. The reefs are covered in a wide range of colourful sponges, jewel anemones, seaweeds and bryozoans. There were schools of butterfly perch, large red &amp; blue Moki, leather jackets, a large conger eel and lots of nudibranchs.<\/p>\n<p>The only down side was at the end of the first dive we discovered one of the divers had lost her new GoPro and her smile L The good news is that a team went back to the same area and was able to find said GoPro so now we have some photos .<\/p>\n<p>I am now looking forward to my next dive adventures at Mana Island.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Murphy Dive &amp; Ski HQ Wellington<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mana Island lies just 3km west of Porirua and yet after many years of diving and 100\u2019s of local dives yesterday was my first dive experience off the island.\u00a0 The island itself is 3km long and just over 2km wide.
