Meet the Minkies!

Minke whales may be the smallest of the baleen whales, but they are among the most widespread and fascinating whales in the ocean. Known for their sleek bodies, curious behavior around boats, and surprising agility, these whales can be found in nearly every ocean on Earth. Despite their relatively modest size, Minke whales are fast swimmers and highly adaptable, making them a favorite among whale watchers and researchers alike.

There are three distinct types of Minke whales: the Common Minke Whale, the Antarctic Minke Whale, and the Dwarf Minke Whale.

The Common Minke Whale is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and in some parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Typically growing to around 10 metres in length, these whales are known for their pointed snouts and quick, darting movements through the water. They often feed on small schooling fish and krill, using their speed and agility to their advantage.

The Antarctic Minke Whale is a separate species found almost exclusively in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. These whales are generally stockier and slightly larger than their Common Minke relatives. They also appear darker in coloration, with solid grey flippers that feature only a light-colored leading edge rather than the distinctive white band seen on Common Minkes.

The Dwarf Minke Whale is the smallest of the three, usually measuring between 7 and 9 metres in length. They are most commonly found in the Southern Hemisphere. Notably, the Great Barrier Reef is the only known location where Dwarf Minke Whales gather predictably and interact with humans. During the winter months of June and July, these whales are known to approach boats and even swimmers, creating one of the most unique whale encounters in the world.

FUN FACT: Minke whales are known as the Stinky Minkes as they are commonly seen farting and excreting on the waters surface. Some say you can smell them before you see them!
