We spent Monday traveling up to Paihia so by the time Tuesday
morning rolled around we were all bright eyed and bushy tailed rearing
to go. For a lot of us this would be our first wreck dive so you could
sense the excitement amongst the group! The weather was marginable
at best but with our boat Whakaari Express an 8.5 meter rib with twin
200’s on the back the wind was not an issue!! Once out at deepwater
cove we were ready to dive the HMNZS Canterbury!
Rolling into the water you could just tell that this was going to be awesome.
I don’t think anything could’ve prepared me for what I was
seeing. Slowly descending down the mooring line this was phenomenal.
We had about 20 meters worth of visibility so everything looked
amazing!! As the ship came into view we were all in awe, seeing this
huge Navy ship sitting on the bottom of the ocean was just
unbelievable. Swimming along to the bow hovering just above the ship
all we could see was endless blue, huge schools of fish were off the
front of the boat with the odd kingfish flying through the schools
catching their dinner.
On our way back to the accent line we swam around the ship looking
into all the doorways and passageways. Even swimming right into the
bridge posing for a few photos. After we had ascended and done our
safety stops we were all back on board, everyone was buzzing about their dives
and super EXCITED!!! to jump in for the second!
